CONWAY, S.C. – The UConn softball team closed out the Chanticleer Showdown on Sunday afternoon with a 4-1 win over the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. UConn moves to 11-7 overall this season.
Graduate student Payton Kinney (Bradenton, Fla.) made her seventh start of the season in the circle for the Huskies. Kinney was outstanding, only giving up one run on just one hit with three strikeouts.
Coastal Carolina opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning as the Chanticleers loaded the bases with zero outs. UConn limited the damage, turning a five-two-three double play, but Coastal was able to sneak a run in as the double play was turned, making it 1-0.
UConn's offense responded right back in the top of the third inning, scoring two runs off the bat of junior infielder Savannah Ring (Wyckoff, N.J.). Ring delivered a clutch two-out double down the left field line, scoring pinch runner Rayah Snyder (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Cat Petteys (Vestal, N.Y.), putting the Huskies in front, 2-1.
Senior infielder Rosie Garcia (San Fernando, Calif.) doubled the Huskies lead in the fifth inning, hitting her second home run of the season, a solo shot to left, extending the UConn lead to 3-1.
Sophomore outfielder Kaitlyn Breslin (Hopkinton, Mass.) pushed the UConn lead to 4-1 in the sixth inning, as she hit her third homer of the season, a solo shot to left center. Breslin has been swinging a hot bat for the Huskies, as she has homered in back to back games for the first time in her career and has five RBI in her last four games.
Junior Hope Jenkins (Folsom, Calif.) came on in relief for Kinney in the middle of the sixth inning. Jenkins shut the door on the Chanticleers, stranding two runners in scoring position to preserve the UConn lead.
Freshman Amber Bretton (Gorham, Maine) came on to close out the win in the seventh inning, earning her first career save.
