Huskies split on Sunday to close out MUSB Invitational

MACON, Ga. – The UConn softball team concluded the Mercer Softball Invitational on Sunday, splitting their two matchups. The Huskies suffered their first loss of the weekend in the first game of the day against Alabama State, 10-8. UConn bounced back in game two, defeating Mercer, 2-1 in five innings due to UConn's drop-dead time with their travel arrangements. UConn moves to 8-5 overall this season.
Game One
Junior Hope Jenkins (Folsom, Calif.) made her fourth start of the season in the circle for the Huskies in game one. Jenkins went 5.2 innings giving up seven earned runs on nine hits, adding six strikeouts.
UConn opened the scoring early in the top of the first inning. Junior infielder Savannah Ring (Wyckoff, N.J.) worked a two-out bases loaded walk, forcing in Rosie Garcia (San Fernando, Calif.) from third base, giving the Huskies a 1-0 lead.
Alabama State seized their first lead in the bottom of the first inning with a two-run home run, putting the Hornets up, 2-1.
Senior outfielder Lexi Hastings (Lynchburg, Va.) responded right back in the second inning, hitting her first home run of the season, a two-run shot to right center, giving the lead right back to the Huskies, 3-2.
UConn's offense put up a five spot in the third inning, giving UConn some breathing room at 8-2. Ring got it started with a double to left center, scoring Cat Petteys (Vestal, N.Y.) all the way from first base. Later in the inning, junior outfielder Kaitlyn Kibling (LaFayette, N.Y.) drove in her fourth RBI in the last two games with a single, scoring Ring from third base. Junior catcher Grace Jenkins (Folsom, Calif.) capped off the big inning with a no doubt about it three-run homer to left center, her team leading fifth of the season. Jenkins now has a team high 18 runs batted in on the season.
Alabama State got a run back in the fifth inning, making it 8-3.
The game unraveled for the Huskies in the sixth inning as Alabama State scored seven runs on six hits, and four UConn errors in the inning, giving the Hornets a 10-8 lead.
Freshman Amber Bretton came on in relief for Hope Jenkins in the middle of the sixth inning, making her fourth appearance of the season. She went 0.1 inning giving up two runs on two hits with one strikeout.
News and Notes
- Grace Jenkins hit her team leading fifth homer of the season, giving her a team high 18 RBI this season. She now has six multi-RBI games this season.
- All nine batters in UConn's starting lineup registered a hit in the game.
- Cat Petteys extends her hitting streak to eight straight games. Petteys recorded her fifth multi-hit game of the season.
- Lexi Hastings hit her first home run of the season. Hastings had six homers a season ago.
- Savannah Ring recorded her first multi-RBI game of the season.
- UConn committed a season high five errors.
Game Two
Graduate student Payton Kinney (Bradenton, Fla.) made her fifth start of the season in game two for the Huskies. Kinney tossed 3.2 scoreless innings only giving up two hits with a pair of strikeouts. The veteran has yet to give up a run in her six appearances this season.
UConn opened the scoring in the top of the first inning as Grace Jenkins batted in her 19th run of the season on a ground out, scoring Hastings from third base.
Senior infielder Rosie Garcia extended the Huskies lead in the third inning, hitting her fourth double of the season, scoring Kibling from second base, making it 2-0.
Redshirt-sophomore Sydnee Koosh (Canton, Ohio) came on in relief for Kinney in the fourth inning, making her eighth appearance of the season. Koosh closed out the win in the circle, only giving up one run and one hit, earning her first career save.
The game ended after the fifth inning due to reaching the drop-dead time for UConn's travel arrangements.
