SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The UConn men's soccer team punched their ticket to the 2025 BIG EAST Tournament with a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over No. 21 Seton Hall on Friday night at Owen T. Carroll Field. After the Pirates took the lead in the 72nd minute, the Huskies rallied late, scoring two goals in the final 13 minutes of the match, giving UConn their 10th win of the season in thrilling fashion.
Redshirt-sophomore goalkeeper Kyle Durham was stout in between the sticks for the Huskies, facing 12 shots and making two saves in the win.
The match between UConn and Seton Hall commenced with UConn pressuring early, as Evan Pickering and Marco Valentic tested Seton Hall's goalkeeper with shots in the opening minutes. The first half saw aggressive play and numerous fouls. Despite both teams' attempts, the half ended scoreless with shots favoring UConn, 7-2.
Seton Hall broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute, on a flicked header from a corner kick, putting the Huskies behind 1-0.
UConn fought back quickly, responding with an equalizer in the 77th minute off the foot of senior forward Austin Brummett, assisted by Sabri Hanni. Sparking the comeback, Brummett tallied his team-leading seventh goal of the season.
Just three minutes later, junior midfielder Max Gummesson headed home the game-winner on a perfectly placed cross by Evan Pickering, putting UConn ahead for the first time in the match, 2-1 with under ten minutes to go. Gummesson nets his second goal of the season and his first career game-winning goal.
Despite numerous attempts from Seton Hall in the closing minutes, UConn held their lead to secure their tenth victory of the season, securing a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament for the third consecutive season. The Huskies earned their first double-digit win season under head coach Chris Gbandi, marking their first ten-win campaign since 2018 (12-6-2).
