Huskies Score 2 in 3rd Period, Skate to Tie vs. #15 Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The UConn men's hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie vs. no.15 Providence Saturday evening after goals from Carlin Dezainde and Ryan Tattle forced overtime. Sophomore Trey Scott scored the shootout winner, securing the extra point for the Huskies.
The game began with UConn and Providence battling, with both teams looking to jump ahead early. UConn had a power-play opportunity midway through the period but were unable to convert as Providence penalty kill shut the Huskies down. Later in the period following a UConn penalty, Providence was able to capitalize on their own power play to give the home team a 1-0 lead. The Huskies were unable to find the equalizer in the first period as they entered the break trailing by 1.
The friar's offense carried momentum from the first period into the second as Providence was able to extend their lead early in the second period creating a 2-0 hole for the Huskies. UConn had an opportunity to respond later in the period with a power play. The friars looked to extend their lead late in the second period following another UConn penalty, but the Huskies penalty kill, and senior Tyler Muszelik were able to shut the Providence power play down as they entered the break trailing by two.
In the third period, the Huskies found their offensive stride. A strong forecheck by UConn created a turnover and the Huskies capitalized as freshman Carlin Dezainde stole the puck and fired a shot bar down to give UConn their first goal of the evening. The Huskies continued to pressure but the Providence defense and netminder Philip Svedeback were able to keep the Huskies at bay. With under two minutes remaining in the game, the Huskies pulled goaltender Tyler Muszelik in favor of an extra skater and were able to capitalize as senior Ryan Tattle fired a puck from the point tying the game at two. Neither team was able to find the winning goal in regulation resulting in a sudden death overtime period.
In the overtime period, The Huskies controlled the puck early and had multiple opportunities for the game winner but were unable to as the Providence defense and Svedeback turned away the UConn attempts. Providence responded late in the overtime period, but the Huskies defense stood strong preventing the friars from finding their third goal of the night. With neither team finding the back of the net in overtime, the game officially ended in a tie but needed a shootout to determine the extra point in Hockey East Standings.
In the shootout, Tyler Muszelik stopped every attempt faced and in the third round, the Huskies were able to secure the extra point as defenseman Trey Scott found the back of the net.
Up Next: The Huskies will turn their attention to a matchup with Northeastern University. The Huskies will host Northeastern in Storrs Friday November 14 before traveling to Matthews Arena November 15.
