STORRS, Conn. — UConn secured a decisive 2-0 victory over Georgetown University on Friday afternoon, with the Huskies' defense maintaining a shutout as their goalkeeper recorded four saves.
UConn initiated the first quarter with strong offensive efforts, earning penalty corners at 1:56 and 2:11 through Sol Simone. Despite attempts by Julia Bressler and Simone, the shots were blocked and went wide, respectively. Georgetown countered with a penalty corner at 11:10, followed by a shot from Elena Perez, which was saved by UConn's goalie, Natalie McKenna. The quarter concluded with no score, leaving both teams at 0-0.
The second quarter commenced with a pivotal moment for the Huskies as Fien Hollander capitalized on a penalty corner, netting the first goal of the contest at 17:13. This effort was supported by assists from Zita Grigoliet and Simone, putting UConn ahead. Georgetown responded with multiple challenges, but McKenna's goalkeeping was crucial, making key saves against shots from Sydney Yodh, Lily Saal, and Perez to maintain the lead. The quarter concluded with UConn ahead, 1-0, solidifying their advantage going into the next quarter.
The third quarter commenced with the Huskies maintaining offensive pressure, marked by multiple penalty corners initiated by Simone. Despite several attempts, including shots from Olivia McKenna, Hollander, and Bressler, Georgetown's goalkeeper, Ella Fahey, made critical saves to deny UConn additional goals. Olivia Donahue also contributed with a shot that went wide following another penalty corner. Georgetown managed a penalty corner late in the quarter, indicating a brief offensive push, but it did not result in a score. The quarter closed with UConn holding the lead, the scoreboard remaining unchanged at 1-0 in favor of the Huskies.
The fourth quarter began with UConn extending its lead as Violeta Francese scored off an assist from Olivia McKenna at 46:45, bringing the score to 2-0. Georgetown attempted to respond with a penalty corner at 51:36, but their ensuing shot was blocked, maintaining UConn's momentum. In the closing minutes, the Huskies continued to press offensively. Simone earned a penalty corner at 58:07, followed by shots from Bressler and Donahue, the latter saved by Georgetown's goalie, Fahey. UConn's strong defense and consistent pressure preserved their 2-0 lead as the quarter concluded.
McKenna recorded four saves in her shutout performance, securing the win. Hollander contributed the game-winning goal, finishing with one goal from two shots. Francese added to the scoreboard with a goal on her only shot. Grigoliet delivered an assist, contributing to the team's offensive efforts.
