Huskies Fall to Xavier on Friday Night

CINCINNATI, OHIO-- UConn women's volleyball was defeated by the Xavier Musketeers in four sets (19-25, 18-25, 25-16, 15-25) at the Cintas Center on Friday night.
Xavier grabbed an early 7-4 advantage, pouring in three aces to take the lead. Margo Kemp recorded two consecutive kills, forcing UConn to call a timeout as the Musketeers took a 12-8 lead. Xavier rode the momentum throughout the first set, with Kemp and Emma Grace combining for a block to extend the advantage to 17-10. The Huskies cut into the lead, aided by kills from Emma Werkmeister (Victor, N.Y.) and Loren Winn (Dallas, Texas) and an ace from Brenna Wyman (Louisville, Ky.) to close the gap to 20-15. Xavier responded out of the timeout, capitalizing on UConn miscues to take the first set, 25-19.
The Musketeers started hot in the second set, fueled by two blocks from Kemp and an ace from Julia Grace to go in front 7-3. Xavier continued its strong play on the defensive end, with blocks from Anna Taylor and McKinley Boehm stretching the lead to 15-7, pushing the Huskies into a timeout. After falling behind 20-9, Werkmeister and Loren Winn (Dallas, Texas) fueled the UConn offense with a kill apiece. Anna Herman (Vincennes, Ind.) contributed a block to cut the Musketeer advantage to 20-14. Grace and Boehm helped Xavier pad their lead in the second frame, lifting the hosts to a 25-18 second-set victory.
Werkmeister notched her 10th kill of the night in the opening moments of the third set, pacing the Huskies to an early 7-4 lead. Xavier responded to the score at 8-8, but UConn showed resiliency in the third, powered by two kills from Grace Maria (Arlington, Va.) to take a 12-8 lead. The Huskies continued their clinic in the third frame, as Winn, Werkmeister, and Audrey Rome (Sandwich, Ill.) led UConn to a 25-16 third-set victory.
Xavier came out strong in the fourth frame, building an 8-4 advantage after kills from Grace and Charlotte Moriarty. Werkmeister continued her strong play in the fourth set, chipping in three kills to keep the Huskies within three at 12-9. Two more kills from Kemp and UConn errors fueled a 5-0 Xavier run to put the hosts in front 19-12. Werkmeister fired in two more kills to bring the Huskies closer, but the Musketeers took control of the fourth set, winning it 25-15 to take the match in four sets.
Werkmeister recorded a game-high 17 kills in the defeat for the Huskies. Grace led the Musketeers with 10 kills and 13 digs. Â
The Huskies return to action tomorrow night in Indianapolis at 5:00 pm, taking on the Butler Bulldogs at Hinkle Fieldhouse on ESPN+.
