INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.—UConn women's volleyball bounced back from Friday night's defeat, sweeping the Butler Bulldogs (25-18, 25-18, 25-14) on Saturday evening at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
Grace Maria (Arlington, Va.) fired in two consecutive aces to get the Huskies an early 4-1 lead. The Bulldogs responded with a run of their own, cutting the UConn lead to 7-6, after multiple kills from Zoe McDonald and a combined block from McDonald and Alaleh Tolliver. Hanna Tylska (Sroda Wielkopolska, Poland), Anna Herman (Vincennes, Ind.) and Audrey Rome (Sandwich, Ill.) powered the UConn attack, as the Huskies stretched their lead to 15-10. Butler cut into the lead, capitalizing on UConn errors to close the gap to 16-14. McKenna Brand (Lucas, Texas) chipped in an ace, and Emma Werkmeister (Victor, N.Y.) fired in a kill to force Butler into a timeout with the visitors leading 20-15. Maria's third ace of the set pushed UConn to set point, where Werkmeister powered the Huskies to a 25-18 first set victory.
UConn took advantage of multiple Butler miscues to take an early 5-1 advantage in the second frame. Brand and Doga Kutlu (Ankara, Turkey) fired in aces, as the Huskies grabbed control in the set to take a commanding 13-6 lead. Brenna Wyman (Louisville, Ky.) dialed in an ace and Loren Winn (Dallas, Texas) rejected a Butler attack to fuel the UConn lead to 17-10. Elise Ward poured in an ace for the Bulldogs, and the duo of Sawyer Jones and Carly Slusser combined on a block to push the Huskies to call a timeout, with the visitors leading 17-12. UConn pulled away down the stretch, fueled by a Werkmeister ace and two kills from Tylska, taking the second frame, 25-18.
The service line domination continued for the Huskies in the third set, with Wyman and Isabella Suhy (Toledo, Ohio) each contributing an ace to put UConn in front 7-3. Rome and Winn continued to ignite the attack, as the Huskies maintained a 14-8 lead in the frame. With their eyes on a sweep, Werkmeister chipped in two more terminations to extend the visitors' edge to 21-13. The trio of Herman, Winn, and Tylska paced a relentless UConn attack, as the Huskies took the third set 25-14 to complete the sweep.
Werkmeister led all players with 10 kills. Kutlu conducted the UConn offense with 31 assists. Tolliver led Butler with eight kills. UConn's .369 hit percentage as a team marked the second highest in a match this season (.382 vs Lehigh on August 29th). The Huskies fired in 11 aces as a team, the seventh occurrence of double-digit aces this season.
UConn returns home next weekend for a showdown with Georgetown on Friday, October 17th at 3:30 pm.
