STORRS, Conn. - Â The UConn women's field hockey team are back to their winning ways after taking down Temple 2-0 in the BIG EAST Conference opener. Senior Madi Herb scored the opening goal while freshman Sophie Perschk sealed the win for the Huskies in the fourth quarter.
It was a defensive battle in the first half as neither team was able to find the back of the net. Both teams had their chances to open the scoring, but Natalie McKenna for UConn and Isabelle Ospitale for Temple kept the game scoreless. The Huskies pressured early having multiple rushes but could not finish. Temple found their chances later in the half however Natalie McKenna stood strong, saving all shots faced in the half.
After adjustments at halftime, UConn came out firing. The Huskies were able to open the scoring as freshman Juul Sauer found senior Madi Herb in front for the tip in and the first goal of the match. With the lead, UConn's defense went to work, causing turnovers and limiting Temple chances. UConn's penalty corners defense bounced back after allowing three goals vs. Harvard, to hold Temple to zero goals on their attempts.
UConn doubled its lead in the fourth quarter as Juul Sauer sent the ball forward to freshman Sophie Perschk who dove and fired the shot above the goalkeeper for the goal. Two goals were all UConn needed as they shutout the Owls and improved to 6-1 on the season, 1-0 in conference play.
UP NEXT: UConn will be back in action Sunday as they welcome the Yale Bulldogs to Storrs, for a non-conference matchup. The game is set to begin at 1pm and can be streamed live on UConn+.
