Softball takes series win, winning eighth straight game

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn softball team picked up their first BIG EAST series win of the season, defeating the DePaul Blue Demons, 6-0 on Saturday afternoon at Burrill Family Field. The win puts the Huskies over .500 for the first time this season.

Hallie Siems picked up her sixth win of the season, earning her eleventh start in the circle. She tossed 4.1 scoreless innings, only surrendering two hits adding a season high nine strikeouts.

UConn took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning as Hope Jenkins brought home her twin sister, Grace Jenkins from third base.

The Huskies broke it open in the third inning scoring three runs on four hits. Rosie Garcia doubled the lead with her third home run of the season, a rocket to left center field, making it 2-0. Haley Coupal knocked in a run in her third consecutive game, singling to left field, scoring pinch runner Rayah Snyder from second base. Giuliana Abruscato capped off the inning with a bunt squeeze play, scoring Savannah Ring from third base.

The Huskies added two runs to the lead in the fifth inning. Garcia hit a sacrifice fly to deep right center field, allowing Lexi Hastings to score all the way from second base. Ring singled to shortstop, scoring Grace Jenkins from third base, and driving in her fifth run of the season.

Hope Jenkins came on in relief for Siems in the fifth inning, making her eighth appearance of the season in the circle. Jenkins was lights out retiring all eight batters she faced giving the Huskies their third shutout win of the season.
