SB splits opening day doubleheader at Georgia Tech

ATLANTA, Ga. – The UConn softball team split their opening day doubleheader against Georgia Tech, winning game one 6-5 and dropping game two 2-1.
Meghan O'Neil started in game one of the doubleheader. She went two innings with three strikeouts. Freshman Hope Jenkins made her debut in the circle coming in relief for O'Neil in the third inning. She went the distance for the Huskies finishing with four strikeouts in five innings pitched notching her first career win.
UConn took an early lead in the first inning off the bat of Hope Jenkins. She delivered a sacrifice fly to score Lexi Hastings, giving the Huskies a 1-0 lead.
Georgia Tech took a 3-1 lead in the second inning. The Huskies would regain the lead for good thanks to a pair of freshmen in the fourth inning. Savannah Ring hit an RBI single to left, the first hit and RBI of her career trimming the Yellow Jackets lead to 3-2. Grace Jenkins delivered the big blow for the Huskies with a grand slam to left center, the first home run of her career to give the Huskies a 6-3 lead.
Georgia Tech scored two runs in the fifth and sixth innings, but the Huskies held on to secure their first win of the season.
Payton Kinney started in the circle in game two for the Huskies. She pitched all six innings only giving up three hits with three strikeouts.
Georgia Tech scored the game's first run in the fourth inning making it 1-0. UConn tied the game at one in the sixth inning off a Hope Jenkins double off the wall in dead center scoring Ring.
The Yellow Jackets regained the lead in the bottom half of the sixth inning on a bases loaded walk.
UConn will be back in action tomorrow morning against North Texas at 10:30am and then UIC at 3:30pm.
