WEST POINT, NY – The UConn women's tennis team spent the weekend in West Point, NY competing with 18 other teams in the highly competitive Army Invitational. The traditional tournament setting featured five singles flights and two doubles flights.
UConn freshman Cameron Didion had a great weekend, winning the Flight D Conslation bracket with four-straight singles wins.
"Overall, we had a record of 13-10 in our matches played," stated Director of Tennis Glenn Marshall. "Against this level of quality competition, I am pleased with our results. Our doubles team of Karamyshev and Constantinou won 2 rounds in doubles, to advance to the quarter finals. They came within two points of beating the #1 seeded team from Syracuse, and came up just short losing in a tiebreaker, 7-6."
"In singles we had Cameron Didion and Nansi Toskova with very solid performances in their flights," commented Marshall. "Nansi won 2 rounds of play, before losing a very close match in her quarterfinal match 7-5, 7-5. Cameron lost her opening match to the top seeded player in her flight 7-6, 6-4. She then reeled off four-straight wins to capture the D Flight Consolation championship."
After dropping her opening match to eventual flight winner Emma Sy, Didion dominated in the consolation bracket. She defeated Andie Williams of Quinnipiac, 8-4, and Emily O'Donovan of Seton Hall, 8-1. She closed out the bracket by winning 8-2 over Flavia Rambaldi of Sacred Heart and Jordan Bradley of QU, 8-0.
In Flight C, sophomore Nansi Toskova (Montreal, Quebec) won her first two matches to get to the quarterfinals. Nansi Toskova defeated Jordan Ben-Samuel from Colgate, 6-1, 6-1, and then Stony Brook's Chandrika Joshi, 7-6 (7), 6-2.
In doubles, the team of junior Aleksandra Karamyshev (Ashton, MD) and sophomore Maria Constantinou (Nicosia, Cyprus) advanced to the quarter of the Flight A draw. The duo beat Fordham's Avery Aude and Valeria Deminova, 6-2 and the QU team of Kamilla Nella and Alessia Truden, 6-4. In the quarters, the duo lost a hard fought battle with top seeded Maria Ines Fonte and Viktoriya Kanapatskaya of Syracuse, 7-6 (7).
