Doc Gimmler Invitational Results
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – UConn grad student Jared Nelson came into the 2022-23 college golf season off a red-hot summer and has yet to cool off.
Nelson (Rutland, Vt.) fired a sizzling 7-under 63 on Saturday to take the lead after the first round of the Doc Gimmler Invitational and never gave it up, shooting a 15-under, 63-67-65=195 to win the tournament by three strokes over an 86-player field.
It was the fourth first-place finish of Nelson's college career, which began as a freshman at Siena College, and his second at UConn. His three sub-70 rounds give him 19 for his career, along with 39 rounds of par-or-better. It was his 14th Top Five finish.
Nelson's 63 in the first round was the lowest round of the tournament and a career low round for the UConn grad. He led the tournament in birdies with 20 and tied for the lead in Par 5 scoring, playing those holes in 6-under par.
Nelson's outstanding effort led UConn to a tie for fifth place in the 15-team field, held at the Bethpage State Park Red Course. The Huskies shot an aggregate 8-under, 274-278-280=832 to tie with Lehigh and Columbia for fifth place. Harvard (807) won the Gimmler by one stroke over host school St. John's.
Also competing for the Huskies, junior Jimmy Paradise (Tampa, Fla.) had the fifth Top 20 finish of his career and his third and fourth sub-70 rounds , shooting a 4-under, 67-71-68=206, to tie for 17th place.
Freshman Colin Spencer (Mashpee, Mass.), in the first event of his college career, tied for 43rd place with a 2-over, 73-67-72=212, which included his first sub-70 round in college.
Sophomore Trevor Lopez (Winchester, Mass.) tied for 72nd place with a 10-over, 71-74-75=220, while sophomore Vikram Konanki (Newton, Mass.) was in 75th place following his 12-over, 74-73-75=222. Playing as an individual, freshman Connor Goode (Glastonbury, Conn.) equaled Lopez with a 10-over, 74-77-69-220, to tie for 72nd place, and include the first sub-70 round of his college career.
Nelson's impressive performance is a continuation of a summer full of outstanding performances. He won the prestigious Hornblower Memorial in Plymouth, Mass., captured the Vermont Amateur Championship, and then won the 93rd New England Amateur Championship in Cranston, R.I. Nelson then added a victory in the U.S. Amateur Qualifying Tournament at Connecticut National in Putnam, which earned him a berth in the U.S. Amateur Championship in New Jersey, where he advanced to the championship's match play knockout rounds.
UConn's season continues on Sept. 18-19, when the Huskies remain in-state to compete in the Hartford Hawks Invitational at Bull's Bridge Golf Club in South Kent, Conn.
