Hartford Hawks Invitational Results
SOUTH KENT, Conn. – Fresh off an individual victory at the season-opening Doc Gimmler Invitational, UConn grad student Jared Nelson very nearly put together back-to-back titles before finishing as the runner-up Tuesday after the final round of the Hartford Hawks Invitational, held at the Bull's Bridge Golf Club.
Nelson (Rutland, Vt.) had three straight sub-70 rounds at Bull's Bridge – extending his season streak of sub-70 rounds to six in a row – and his 11-under, 69-68-68=205 was good enough for an individual second-place tie with Johnny Travale of UCF. Trevale's UCF teammate Luis Carrera won individual medalist honors with a 16-under, 200, to top the 95-player field.
Nelson's score led the Huskies to a third-place finish in the 16-team field. UConn's aggregate 6-under, 285-279-294=858 finished one stroke behind second-place Towson (857). UCF won the team title with a 35-under, 829.
It was the 15th Top Five finish of Nelson's career. The three sub-70 rounds upped his career total to 22 in that category and his career total of par-or-better rounds climbs to 42. The 205 total is the third-lowest tournament total of his college career.
Also for the Huskies, junior Jimmy Paradise (Tampa, Fla.) had the fifth Top 20 finish of his career, coming in tied for 12th with a 1-under, 70-74-71=215, which included his 11th and 12th rounds of par-or-better.
Freshman Colin Spencer (Mashpee, Mass.) had his best tournament so far, tying for 24th place with a 1-over, 70-71-76=217. Sophomore Vikram Konanki (Newton, Mass.) finished in a tie for 66th place with a 10-over, 76-71-79=226, and sophomore Eric Boulger (Walpole, Mass.) tied for 84th with a 17-over, 82-69-82=233.
Playing as individuals, UConn sophomore Trevor Lopez (Westchester, Mass.) tied for 42nd place with a 4-over, 74-71-75=220, and freshman Chris Sacher (Schoeffengrund, Hesse, Germany) finished 87th with a 19-over, 77-75-83=235.
UConn will be idle next week before hosting the UConn Invitational at GreatHorse in Hampden, Mass., on Oct. 2-4.
