STORRS, Conn. - The UConn men's track & field team will split their squad this weekend to send athletes to the Navy Invitational at Ingram Field in Annapolis and at the Virginia Challenge at the University of Virginia.
The majority of the Huskies competing this weekend will head to Navy where UConn will compete with the host Midshipmen and George Mason. A smaller contingent of UConn athletes will head to UVA to compete at the largest track and field meet on the East Coast this weekend with over 1,700 athletes entered in the Virginia Challenge at Lannigan FIeld.
The Huskies are coming off their second win of the outdoor season after beating the field at last weekend's UConn Northeast Challenge. UConn came out on top of a 22 team field at the home event, getting seven event wins on the day. UConn jumped up three spots in the USTFCCCA Northeast Regional Rankings to take over the No. 1 spot in the poll for the first time this outdoor season.
UConn continued to rack up BIG EAST Weekly Awards this week as senior Daniel Claxton (Nesconset, NY) was named the BIG EAST Men's Field Athlete of the Week for the second straight-week. Claxton got his first win of the outdoor season in the high jump and did it with his best height this spring. Claxton beat the field at the UConn Northeast Challenge, clearing the bar at 2.08 meters. He leads the BIG EAST and is 72nd in the nation.
As a team, the Huskies are at the top of 13 events in the current BIG EAST rankings heading into this weekend. Junior Wellington Ventura (Cresskill, NJ) is first in the 400 meters and moved up to 63rd in the NCAA after his time of 46.46 seconds at last weekend's meet. Ventura is entered in the 400 and 400 high hurdles at Virginia this weekend.
Freshman Terrel Williams (Maplewood, NJ) lead the 110 meter hurdle rankings and his new PR time of 13.81 seconds last weekend at home has moved him up the national rankings to 29th. Senior Jordan Torney (Toms River, NJ) leads the league rankings in the 400 meter high hurdles after his showing last weekend of 52.32 seconds, moving into the NCAA rankings as well at 80th. Both will be competing at Navy.
Following this weekend's competition, the Huskies will take part in the Penn Relays in their final tune-up before the BIG EAST Championship in May.
