SB wins first 2 games in Cougar Classic

Charleston, SC – UConn starts off the Cougar Classic with two wins as the pitching staff leads the way for the Huskies.
The UConn softball team kicked off the Cougar Classic Friday with a 4-0 win over the Western Carolina Catamounts.
Junior Meghan O'Neil started game one for the Huskies. She pitched a solid 4.2 innings only giving up four hits and notching 3 strikeouts under her belt.
UConn would get it going at the plate early creating a lot of traffic on the base paths. The Huskies would get runners in scoring position in the first 3 innings but couldn't cash in.
UConn would finally break through in the fourth inning. Erika Coreth knocked in Reese Guevarra on a double to right center giving the Huskies a 1-0 lead. Briana Marcelino would later score pinch runner Hollis Wivell on a single to center. Marcelino and Aziah James would both score on a throwing error giving the Huskies a 4-0 lead.
Freshman Delaney Nagy would come in relief of O'Neil in the fifth getting the Huskies out of a bases loaded jam. She would go on to close it out pitching 2.1 innings with three punch outs giving the Huskies the 4-0 win.
In game two of the day UConn took down the College of Charleston Cougars 6-0.
Marybeth Olson set the tone in game two by punching out the first four Cougar batters she faced. She went on to pitch five shutout innings, notching seven strikeouts and only giving up four hits on the day.
The Huskies hitters struck first in the fifth on a fielder's choice off the bat of Rosie Garcia making it 1-0. UConn would score its second run on a bases loaded walk to Jana Sanden. Sami Barnett would add a sac fly scoring Guevarra making it 3-0 Huskies. In the sixth the Huskies would tack on two more on a single by Garcia and a pass ball scoring Marcelino extending the lead to 5-0.
UConn would get another insurance run thanks to pinch hitter, Giuliana Abruscato who tripled and then later scored on a wild pitch.
Freshman Elise Sokolsky came in relief for Olson in the sixth. She would go on to pitch two innings closing out the win for the Huskies.
UConn will be back in action tomorrow at 10:00am against Appalachian State and then square off in a rematch with Western Carolina at 12:30pm.
