VILLANOVA, Penn. – The UConn men's soccer team beat the Villanova Wildcats 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Higgins Soccer Complex. Freshman forward Eli Conway scored the game winner in the 76thminute to secure the win for the Huskies.
UConn started the match on the front foot generating two shots in the first fifteen minutes of the game. In the 13th minute freshman Christian Dionne won a free kick outside of the Wildcats box but Soren Ilsoe's free kick soared wide of the goal.
The next 30 minutes of the first half was played mostly in the midfield with both teams trying to find an opening goal. The half ended scoreless with each team having four shots a piece.
UConn came out of the half strong, tallying four shots in the first five minutes of the second half. In the 48thminute Ilsoe had a shot that was blocked and deflected to an open Okem Chime in the box, but his shot was also blocked. Just one minute later Jayden Reid served a cross that found its way to an open Dionne in the box, but his shot sailed over the crossbar.
The Huskies kept their foot on the gas pedal outshooting the Wildcats 13-7 in the second half. Scott Testori had a chance in the 61st minute as Ilsoe found him in space outside the Wildcats box but his shot at the near post was just wide. UConn had a flurry of chances after the Testori opportunity but just could not convert.
Conway broke the deadlock in the 76th minute, getting on the end of a rebound on a shot from Frantz Pierrot to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. This is Conway's second goal of the season.
The Huskies managed to fend off waves of attacks from Villanova to close out their second conference win of the season.
