UConn Back in Action at Providence

STORRS, Conn. – UConn (13-13, 5-4 BIG EAST) softball returns to the diamond for the first time since April 3, resuming BIG EAST play with a three-game set April 27-28. The Huskies travel up the road to Rhode Island for trio of games against Providence (3-12-1, 2-9-1 BIG EAST) at Glay Field.
UConn and Providence will play a Tuesday afternoon double header with first pitch of game one slated for 3:00 p.m. followed by a 5:00 p.m. start in the second game. The teams close out the series Wednesday afternoon with a 1:00 contest.

Last Time Out…
UConn dropped its weekend series at DePaul back on April 2-3. The Huskies battled all weekend but fell 5-1, 6-4 Friday afternoon and 4-2 Saturday.
Stat sheet Stuffers…
- UConn ranks 7th in the NCAA in stolen bases/game with an average of 2.4 per contest. The Huskies are 62-of-75 overall on bag swipes, led by Aziah James (13, 1st in BIG EAST), Hollis Wivell (11, T-2nd in BIG EAST), Briana Marcelino and Reese Guevarra (10, T-5rd in BIG EAST), Additionally, the Huskies' 107 runs, 96 RBI, and 25 home runs rank third in the conference.
- Freshman pitcher Payton Kinney (2.65 ERA) leads the league in innings pitched (100.1). She also ranks second in opposing batting average (.201), third with 99 strikeouts, and T-3rd in wins (8).
- The pitching duo of Kinney and Meghan O'Neil (3.58 ERA, 72.1 innings) have combined to limit opposing hitters to a .237 batting average and a 3.01 ERA, first and second in the conference, respectively.
- Briana Marcelino and Devon Casazza's six dingers are tied for second… Reese Guevarra is fifth with 34 hits
Scouting the Opponent…
- The Friars enter the week coming off a tie in their series finale against Butler over the weekend. Providence jumped out to a 4-1 lead but Butler tied the game after a three-run rally in the fifth, and the game went on to end in a 4-4 draw. The two teams split the Saturday double header with the Friars taking game one, 7-2, before the Bulldogs responded with a 9-2 win in the second.
- Tori Grifrone was named the BIG EAST Softball Freshman of the Week, as for April 26. Graduate student Sarah Gunderson and junior Daniela Alvarez were also recognized, and named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.

UConn and Providence have met 83 times on the diamond all-time. The Huskies hold a commanding 61-22 series lead.
