Huskies Continue BIG EAST Play at DePaul

STORRS, Conn. – UConn (13-10, 5-1 BIG EAST) softball hits the road for its first of two-consecutive BIG EAST weekend series, the first stop being Chicago, Illinois. The Huskies will be in the Windy City for a three-game set against the DePaul Blue Demons (11-7, 3-0 BIG EAST) April 2-3 at Cacciatore Stadium. The teams kick off the weekend with a Friday doubleheader, then close out the series with a single game Saturday.

Last Time Out…
The Huskies are coming off a 3-0 weekend against Butler. UConn swept the Saturday doubleheader, posting 6-1 and 4-2 wins. In the final game of the series, the Huskies grinded out a 1-0 victory to complete the three-game sweep of the Bulldogs.
Raking in the Awards…
For the second time this season, UConn swept BIG EAST Pitcher and Freshman of the Week Honors. Payton Kinney garnered her second major conference award as she was crowned Pitcher of the Week while Jana Sanden garnered her second consecutive and third overall Freshman of the Week honor. Additionally, senior Reese Guevarra achieved Weekly Honor Roll status for her contributions last week.
Stat Sheet Stuffers…
- UConn ranks 5th in the NCAA in stolen bases/game with an average of 2.61 per contest. The Huskies are 60-of-71 overall on bag swipes, led by Aziah James (13, 1st in BIG EAST), Hollis Wivell (11, 2nd in BIG EAST), Briana Marcelino and Reese Guevarra (10, T-3rd in BIG EAST), Additionally, the Huskies lead the league in total hits (161) while their 100 runs, 89 RBI, and 23 home runs rank second in the conference.
- Freshman pitcher Payton Kinney (2.45 ERA, 3rd in BIG EAST) leads the league in innings pitched (91.1), strikeouts (89), opposing batting average (.193), and wins (8).
- The pitching duo of Kinney and Meghan O'Neil (3.11 ERA, 65.1 innings) have combined to limit opposing hitters to a .230 batting average and a 2.73 ERA, both first in the conference, respectively.
- Briana Marcelino currently ranks second in the BIG EAST in total runs scored (17)… She and Devon Casazza's six dingers are tied for second, Jana Sanden's five stand in the fifth spot… Reese Guevarra is T-1st with 30 hits, Sanden fifth with 23… Sanden's 19 RBI are third in the conference, Marcelino ranks fifth with 15.
Scouting the Opponent…
- The Blue Demons returned to competition for the first time in 17 days and picked up right where they left off with a 7-5 win over Loyola-Chicago on Wednesday afternoon.
- Prior to that, DePaul rallied from a five-run deficit after two innings back on March 14 to top St. John's, 9-8, and clinch the series sweep for the Blue Demons. DePaul used a four-hit, four-run sixth inning to claim the lead and secure the win.
- Angela Scalzitti and Jessica Cothern lead the Blue Demons behind the plate with a team-high 19 hits. Scalzitti has posted seven doubles, three triples and eight RBI's, while Cothern owns four home runs, four doubles and nine RBI. In the circle, Krista Dalgarn and Natalie Halvorson have earned the bulk of the work with the two combining for 101 of the team's 121 innings. Dalgarn boasts a 7-1 record and a season total of 50 strikeouts.
All-Time Series…
DePaul leads the all-time series 16-4, posting an 8-0 win in the last meeting back on Feb. 21, 2014. UConn's last win against the Blue Demons came on May 5, 2013 – a 3-2, eight-inning win.
