Huskies Edged by Elon in Extra Innings

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – UConn and Elon were locked into a defensive fight for eight innings Sunday morning at Anderson Stadium, but the Huskies (6-8) found themselves on the wrong side of the extra-inning contest as they were edged, 1-0, by Elon in the final game of the Carolina Classic.
The Huskies recorded seven hits in the game, three of those coming from Hollis Wivell in her four plate appearances. Taylor Zatyk went 2-for-3 at the plate, and Reese Guevarra and Jana Sanden each produced one hit in three at-bats to round out the offensive leaders. Payton Kinney (3-6) earned the start in the circle and picked up a pair of strikeouts in two and one-third innings of work. Meghan O'Neil tallied five and one-third innings of work in the circle and picked up two strikeouts as well.
UConn put themselves in position to grab the lead in the first. Wivell picked up a single then stole second. Sanden followed with a single to center field that advanced Wivell ahead to third, then stole second to put runners in scoring position. Elon managed to get out of the inning unscathed.
After picking up hits in the second, third, and fourth, the Huskies were able to get another pair of runners at second and third with a chance to break the scoreless tie in the bottom fifth. Devon Casazza was walked to begin the inning, then Cali Jolley checked in to pinch run for Casazza. Wivell picked up another single and stolen base while Jolley advanced to third. With just one out recorded at that point, UConn had an opportunity to put some points on the board. Unfortunately, the Phoenix were able to find their way out of their predicament again and the game headed to the sixth still tied 0-0.
With neither side able to breakthrough on the scoreboard, the contest headed into extras. Elon scored on a single and took a 1-0 lead in the top of the eighth, then recorded a 1-2-3 inning to lock down the result.
