STORRS, Conn. – The UConn women's cross-country team will finally get to make their official return to the BIG EAST on Friday when they run in the conference championship race at WakeMed Soccer Park Field in Cary, N.C.
"Our first Big East championship being back, were hoping to make it a memorable one," stated head cross country coach Lindsay Crevoiserat. "We have tons of momentum to build off of from the past few weeks beating some nationally and regionally ranked teams. We're ranked 1st in the region heading into the championship which is an exciting place to be."
The race on Friday will step off at 11 am and will feature the Huskies and student-athletes from Georgetown, Providence, Villanova, Butler, Xavier, Marquette, Creighton, DePaul, St. John's and Seton Hall. The race will be available to stream on the conference YouTube page and FloSports.Â
The Huskies have a pair of races under their belts heading into Friday's title race and enter the weekend ranked No. 1 in the Northeast Region in the latest USTFCCCA regional rankings. UConn last competed at the Spider-Patriot Classic where the finished tied for first as a team with BIG EAST foe Georgetown.
"Going into this race, Mia will have a race under her belt, and the rest of the team will do exactly what they have been doing," commented Crevoiserat. "It's any teams race on Friday. If we keep doing what we're doing and compete like we can- great things will happen. This is just the start."
Running her first race of the season last time out, senior Mia Nahom (New Milford, Conn.) took eighth place overall with a time of 17:25.3 at the Spider-Patriot race. Classmate Danielle Jordan (Clifton Park, N.Y.) was 10th overall at 17:28.0 and in the first race of the year, she posted a 64th place finish at FSU in 21:44.3. Fellow senior Randi Burr (Westerly, R.I.) was the Huskies' top-finisher at FSU with a 42nd place showing, clocking in at 21:14.7.Â
In the last BIG EAST Cross Country Championship, the Villanova men and the Butler women were victorious at the Wayne Dannehl National Course in Kenosha, Wis. Villanova placed four runners among the top eight finishers. The Butler women had all five scoring among the top 17.
This year may be unpredictable since many teams have not been able to compete in formal competition because of poor weather and health concerns.
Historically, cross country is one of the BIG EAST's most accomplished sports. Nationally, BIG EAST women's teams have won four of the last 11 NCAA national championships. Providence won the NCAA women's title in 2013. Villanova has won nine NCAA women's titles, the last coming in 2010.
