Softball Completes Series Sweep with 1-0 Victory

STORRS, Conn. – In the final game of its weekend series against Butler, UConn (13-10, 5-1 BIG EAST) grinded out a 1-0 victory to complete the three-game sweep of the Bulldogs.
The contest was one of intense defense from both teams with only three hits posted collectively. UConn was led by freshman Payton Kinney in the circle, who went five innings with one hit and four walks through 21 batters faced.
UConn cracked open the seal in the bottom of the fourth with Emily Piergustavo as the leadoff, knocking a single up the middle. Cali Jolley entered the game to pinch run for Piergustavo and then stole second. Makenzie Mason received a walk, then Reese Guevarra singled which pushed Jolley to third and Mason to second. A couple batters later, Jana Sanden's RBI sac fly brought in Jolley for a 1-0 UConn lead.
Butler managed to load the bases in the top of the fifth as the team looked to tie the game and potentially take the lead, but Kinney and the UConn defense forced a pop up to end the inning.
The contest was called at the end of the fifth due to heavy rain, and the Huskies left Burrill Family Field with their sixth-consecutive win.
Next Up…
UConn hits the road for its next two BIG EAST weekend series, the first stop being Chicago, Illinois. The Huskies head to the Windy City for a three-game set at DePaul April 2-3. Playing a doubleheader Friday and a single game Saturday.
