UConn Hosts CCSU at Brand New Burrill Family Field

STORRS, Conn. – For the first time since May 4, 2019, the UConn softball team has a home game! The Huskies host Central Connecticut State Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. in the unofficial home opener of the brand new Burrill Family Field at the Connecticut Softball Complex.

Attendance - UConn is continuing to follow guidance from the State of Connecticut Department of Public Health, which recommends in-person attendance be limited to friends and family of UConn student-athletes and coaches only. We will continue to adhere to this guidance until it is safe to welcome fans back to campus and will communicate any changes to this policy immediately.
Raking in the Awards…
Jana Sanden garnered BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honors for the second time this season after aiding UConn to a 3-1 mark. Additionally, senior Briana Marcelino sophomore Meghan O'Neil were named to the weekly honor roll for their strong performances last week.
Last Time Out…
UConn (9-10, 2-1 BIG EAST) picked up a series win over Creighton in its first weekend of BIG EAST play. The team posted a split decision in the Saturday doubleheader, taking a slim, 2-1 loss in game one before bouncing back with a dominant eight-run victory (UConn 9, CU 1) in the second game. The Huskies wrapped up the weekend by dropping Creighton, 10-5, Sunday afternoon to take the three-game set, two games to one.
Numbers of Note…
- Freshman pitcher Payton Kinney (3.03 ERA) leads the league in innings pitched (71 2/3) and is second in strikeouts (68) and opposing batting average (.220).
- The pitching duo of Kinney and Meghan O'Neil (2.87 ERA, 61 innings) have combined to limiting opposing hitters to a .244 batting average and a 2.95 ERA, first and second in the conference, respectively.
- Briana Marcelino currently ranks second in the BIG EAST in total runs scored (17) and home runs (6)… Reese Guevarra is T-2nd with 22 hits… Sanden's 15 RBI is third in the conference, Marcelino tied for fourth with 13
- UConn racked up eight home runs over the weekend, putting its 2021 total at 19 thus far – 2nd best in the BIG EAST.
- The Huskies are 51-of-60 on their stolen base attempts, led by Aziah James (13, 1st in BIG EAST), Briana Marcelino (10, 2nd in BIG EAST), and Hollis Wivell (9, T-3rd in BIG EAST).
Scouting the Opponent…
- Central Connecticut (4-2) completed a season sweep over Mount St. Mary's on Sunday. The team blasted three home runs in a 10-5 victory in game one, and Carli Backlund hit a walk-off home run in game two.
- Freshman Paige Stringer was named the Northeast Conference Player of the Week, as well as the Rookie of the Week after blasting three home runs in four games against Mount St. Mary's over the weekend.
- Rian Eigenmann leads the team with a .421 average and eight hits, while Stringer ranks first in homers (3) and RBI (8). Five pitchers have seen time in the circle for Blue Devils
All-Time Series…
UConn leads the all-time series, 61-8. The Huskies blanked the Blue Devils, 6-0, in their last matchup back on April 16, 2019.
