WACO, Texas. – The UConn softball team bounced back from a tough first day of the Lone Star State Invitational and picked up a 7-0 victory over the Lamar Cardinals Saturday afternoon at Getterman Stadium. UConn sees its record draw even at 4-4, while Lamar falls to 2-11 overall.
The Huskies' offense was on display this afternoon as the team produced seven runs on six hits. Senior Briana Marcelino paced the team, notching three runs – including a pair of home runs, and two RBI's. Freshman Lauren Benson (1-2) registered a run and a couple of RBI's; Taylor Zatyk (1-3), Aziah James (1-3), and Hollis Wivell (0-1) added a run apiece, and Emily Piergustavo chipped in an RBI to round out the offensive production. Additionally, the Huskies racked up six stolen bases – two by Wivell and one each from Devon Casazza, Marcelino, Zatyk, and Benson.
In the circle, Meghan O'Neil allowed just two hits (17 batters faced) through five innings of work and picked up her second win of the season.
UConn got off to a quick start against the Cardinals. Marcelino kicked off the bottom second with a homerun to left field and right off the bat the Huskies had a 1-0 lead. After Wivell was walked, then stole second, Benson received a walk and the team moved into scoring position. The Huskies caught the defense napping on the ensuing play - Benson stole second, Wivell stole third, then scored on an error to increase the lead to two.
The Huskies doubled their lead in the fourth after putting two more runs on the board. After Reese Gueverra's fly out to begin the inning, James hit a double-bagger to center field and the Huskies were right back in scoring position. A couple plays later, Marcelino picked up her second home run and James also scored.
A trio of runs in the sixth sealed the victory for UConn. Zatyk began the frame with a double to center field, which was followed by an intentional walk of Marcelino. With the defense asleep again, Marcelino stole second and Zatyk stole third to advance the Huskies forward. Shortly after, Benson tripled to right field, Marcelino and Zatyk picked up runs, extending the lead to 6-0. Benson scored off Piergustavo's single to put the finishing touches on the win.
