Nate Carter Rushes for Career-High 136 Yards
AMHERST, Mass. – Freshman running back Nate Carter rushed for a career-best 136 yards on 20 carries, but it wasn't enough as the University of Connecticut football team dropped a 27-13 decision at UMass on Saturday evening in Amherst, Mass. With the win, UConn slips to 0-7 on the season while the Minutemen improve to 1-5.
Carter's 136-yard performance included a 46-yard sprint. He has now run for 259 yards over the last two games. Classmate Keelan Marion added four catches for 80-yards and a touchdown.
Interim head coach Lou Spanos was one of five Huskies unable to join the team due to testing positive for COVID-19. Offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Frank Giufre, tight ends coach Corey Edsall, starting left tackle Ryan Van Demark and freshman offensive lineman Will Meyer also tested positive earlier this week.
Defensive line coach Dennis Dottin-Carter assumed the head coaching duties for Spanos and will continue on in that role until Spanos is able to return.
UMass got the scoring started just seven-minutes into the contest after a 12-play 73-yard drive was capped by an Ellis Merriweather touchdown on a nine-yard rush.
The Huskies responded quickly though and knotted the score at 7-7 after Krajewski found Marion for a 34-yard touchdown strike less than one-minute later. Carter keyed the drive with runs of 30 and 10 yards prior to Marion's fourth TD reception of the season.
McFadden would add a 38-yard field goal with 1:56 left in the first quarter, which extended the UConn lead to 10-7.
Following a UConn turnover deep in the Huskies' territory, the Minutemen converted on a third and goal from the one-yard line to take a 20-10 lead at the 12:46 mark of the fourth quarter.
Sophomore defensive end Eric Watts led the way on defense with nine tackles, including 3.5 tackles for a loss and sophomore linebacker Jackson Mitchell kept up his nation-leading pace with another nine tackles.
The Huskies are back in action when the team returns home to welcome Yale to Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field for Homecoming on Saturday, October 16. Kick is set for 12 p.m. and the contest will be broadcast nationally on CBSSN.
