TAMPA, Fla. – Dayonn Harris notched a goal and the UConn men's soccer battled valiantly in their American Athletic Conference opener, but fell to USF, 2-1, Friday night at Corbett Stadium. The loss drops the Huskies to 3-5 on the year. USF improves to 5-2.
Emilio Ycaza struck for the first goal of the game in the 17th minute, finding the back of the net after a wild serious of events to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead.
The Huskies finally broke through on the scoreboard in the 61st minute of play off the heel of Harris' spectacular shot. A UConn player sent a left diagonal run inside to Jordan Hall, who dished the ball into open space for the cutting Ben Awashie. After Awashie got tripped up, Harris collected the ball, spun and rocketed one past the USF keeper, tying the score at 1-1.
The home team regained a 2-1 lead in the 81st minute after Javain Brown converted a header off a corner kick.
Trailing by a goal, UConn turned up the attack as they maintained possession inside their offensive third. The Huskies nearly found their equalizer in the 89th minute – Felix Metzler sent a cross into the box towards Harris, but he pushed his header attempt wide right.
