UConn falls short in finale, but take series versus Memphis

STORRS, Conn. – A seventh-inning rally by the UConn softball team fell short on Sunday, as the Huskies dropped a 3-1 decision to Memphis in the final game of their American Athletic Conference weekend series at Burrill Family Field.
Junior Carli Cutler blasted her second home run of the weekend in the seventh inning to trim Memphis' lead to 3-1. Freshman Alexis Lemus followed with a single and junior Ashlee Dahman reached on an error – but the Huskies (15-20, 4-5 American) left both on base to end the game.
Despite Sunday's outcome, UConn won the weekend series with Memphis, 2-1, its second-consecutive conference series victory. The Huskies have won six of their last nine games, dating back to last weekend at Wichita State.
Sophomore Reese Guevarra went 2-for-3 at the plate, the only player in either dugout to post a multi-hit game. Redshirt sophomore Olivia Sappington added a single in the fifth inning, while Cutler's solo blast – her third of the season – put the Huskies on the board in the seventh.
Sophomore pitcher Marybeth Olson had another strong start for UConn, allowing just two earned runs (three total) on four hits in the complete-game effort. Olson (9-8) struck-out four batters and walked only two, while stranding five base runners for the Tigers.
Ashley Threatt and Sara Ann Davidson hit home runs for the Tigers, providing all of the offense for Memphis against Olson. Only four players managed hits against the UConn ace.
Memphis pitcher Kailey Hilderbrand got the win, posting a complete-game effort – allowing one run on five hits while throwing just 84 pitches against the Huskies. Four different UConn players recorded hits, but the team didn't get its first until the fourth inning when Guevarra beat-out an infield single.
The Huskies left six runners on base, including a pair in both the fifth and seventh innings, on Sunday. However, it is the first time since 2015 that the Huskies have taken a weekend series from Memphis and will enter next weekend having won four of their last six conference matchups.
On Tuesday, UConn hosts Boston College in a midweek game beginning at 3 p.m. at Burrill Family Field – prior to traveling to Houston for a three-game set next weekend in league action.
