Huskies Fall to Memphis in Five

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The UConn volleyball team fell to Memphis in five sets on Friday night. The Huskies (8-11, 2-5 American) drop a fourth straight conference game, while the Tigers (12-7, 1-6 American) win their first conference game of the year.
How it Happened
The Huskies got off to a hot start in the first set, jumping out to an 11-7 lead, never trailing throughout the set. Sophomore Caylee Parker led the UConn offense with seven kills, while Freshman Madi Whitmire added 11 assists as the Huskies claimed a 25-17 victory. The Tigers battled back and took a tight second set by a score of 25-22, finishing the set on a 7-2 run. UConn jumped out to a 7-3 lead early in set three, before Memphis climbed back into the game. The Huskies were able to hold off a late surge by the Tigers and win set three, 25-21. A back and forth fourth set saw Memphis go ahead 18-15. UConn went on a 5-0 run to lead 20-18, before Memphis clawed their way back and won the set 25-23. The decisive fifth set began with the Tigers jumping out to a 5-2 lead. The Huskies battled hard, but couldn't take the lead and lost the set 15-12, and the match 3-2.
Freshmen in Action
Five freshman Huskies saw action in all five sets in Memphis. Madi Whitmire aided the offense with a team-high 35 assists, also recording five kills and nine digs. Mia Ruffolo led the Huskies with 18 digs and tallied four assists. Allie Garland recorded seven kills, hitting .294 on the night. Jasmine Davis grabbed 12 digs, five kills, and one service ace, and Aset Baker-Falealili tallied nine digs and two service aces.
Caylee Parker also recorded her seventh double-double of the season with a team-high 23 kills, hitting at .263, and added 16 digs and two service aces.
