Huskies Squander Opportunity vs. Knights

STORRS, Conn. - The UConn baseball team entered the ninth inning up 8-4 on Saturday afternoon but were unable to close it out and eventually lost 10-8 in 11 innings against UCF at J.O. Christian Field.
Jake Wallace tried to close out the ballgame with bases loaded and two outs, up 8-4, but Matthew Mika shot a single into centerfield. Two runs came into score and a misplay in centerfield allowed runners to move up to second and third. After an intentional walk, P.J. Poulin entered the ballgame to attempt to close it out with bases loaded and two outs. However, a hit by pitch and wild pitch allowed two runs to score and tie the game at 8-8.
The Knights scored two in the 11th to take a 10-8 lead. The Huskies battled back and put runners at second and third with one out but were unable to tie the game back up.
In a sloppy game across the board, there was eight combined errors and 21 combined walks allowed. Anthony Prato, Thad Phillips and Mike Woodworth all had three-hit games for the Huskies.
Mason Feole received a no decision after pitching five innings, allowing six hits, two runs, one earned and striking out seven.
UConn looks to regroup tomorrow with a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. The first game of the doubleheader will be a seven inning contest while the second game is scheduled for nine innings. Game two will start around 40 minutes after the completion of the first game.
