BELFAST, Northern Ireland – UConn freshman Jachym Kondelik (Budejovice, Czech Republic) scored his first career goal but Boston University junior goaltender Jake Oettinger turned away 39 shots to lead the Terriers to a 3-2 win over the Huskies in the Friendship Four at The SSE Arena in Belfast.
Friday's match-up was a Hockey East meeting as the Huskies fall to 5-7-1 overall and 2-6-1 in the league. BU improves to 4-5-1 overall and 4-3-1 in Hockey East. The Huskies will take on in-state rival Yale University in the consolation game on Saturday at 10:00 am EST while BU plays No. 11 ranked Union for the Belpot Trophy at 2:00 pm EST.
The Huskies put two goals on the board in the first period and outshot BU 41-30 over the game but could not crack Oettinger again over the final two periods. UConn got a 5-on-3 power play chance in the third period and peppered Oettinger with 16 shots but couldn't beat the junior netminder.
UConn took a 1-0 lead at 5:20 in the first on a power play goal from senior Karl El-Mir (Montreal, Quebec) and after BU tied it at 14:46, the Huskies took a 2-1 lead at 18:00 when Kondelik scored the first goal of his young career.
BU sophomore Logan Cockerill tied the game in the second period at 8:55 and classmate Ty Amonte provided the game-winner just 2:39 into the third.
UConn junior Adam Huska (Zvolen, Slovakia) made 27 saves in taking the loss for the Huskies.
1st Period:
The Huskies took an early lead as El-Mir scored his seventh of the season at 5:20. BU's Chad Krys was sent to the box on a tripping call giving the Huskies the first power play of the night. El-Mir was waiting in the slot and put home a rebound of an Alexander Payusov (Montreal, Quebec) shot for a 1-0 lead. Â
The Huskies found themselves in the box for four minutes with two back-to-back penalties on Kondelik and junior Benjamin Freeman (Falmouth, Maine). Â After six huge saves by Huska, Patrick Curry was right in front to pound in a rebound with 40 seconds left on the power play.
With two minutes left in the first, junior Philip Nyberg (Linkoping, Sweden) took a slap shot that was redirected to Kondelik's stick and he tapped it in his first collegiate goal and his 12th point of the season to send UConn to the locker room up 2-1.
2nd Period:
BU's Cockerill found the tying goal at 8:55 in the second. Â Junior Patrick Harper took a wrap-around shot that Huska kept out but Cockerill found the rebound to knot the game at 2-2.
3rd Period:
Early in the third period Amonte gave the Terriers their first lead of the night lifting a shot just over Huska from right in front in a scrum at 2:39.
From there, the BU defense and Oettinger went to work. The Huskies got a 5-on-3 for 1:03 at the 13:50 mark of the period. Oettinger kept the Huskies at bay and the Terriers killed off both penalties. Â
UConn pulled Huska for the extra skater with 1:39 seconds on the clock but could only get one shot on the BU goalie down the stretch.
Next Up:
The Huskies will face Yale tomorrow at 10 am EST.
