UConn (12-9) notched the shutout with 15 strikeouts as a staff, while also stranding 15 Pirate's base runners. Though the staff gave up a season-high 10 walks, the Huskies only allowed four hits.
Mason Feole (3-0) picked up the win for the Huskies, pitching five shutout innings and striking out a career-high eight batters.
The Huskies got on the board in the sixth inning. Back-to-back singles from Chris Winkel and Anthony Prato set the table for junior third baseman Willy Yahn. Yahn grounded a two-run double down the left field line to move the Huskies ahead, 2-0.
Zac Susi tacked on an additional run on an RBI single back up the middle and into center field. It was Susi's team-leading 23rd RBI of the year.
UConn got a big lift in the sixth from redshirt senior Ryan Radue. The right-hander entered the inning with the bases loaded and no one out. Radue coaxed a pop up to third before striking out back-to-back Pirates to end the threat and keep the Huskies out in front, 3-0.
Radue pitched two innings of relief, allowed one hit and struck out a career-high five.
Next up, UConn heads home for their potential home opener on Tuesday, March 28 at 3 p.m. against Boston College.
