STORRS, Conn. - Vic Cegles, who has a strong national reputation in collegiate athletic leadership during a long and distinguished career, has been named the Deputy Athletic Director for the University of Connecticut Division of Athletics.
Cegles will provide leadership for all of the external areas at UConn and will serve as the sport administrator for the Husky men's basketball, baseball and golf programs.
Cegles most recently served as the Director of Athletics at Long Beach State University for the past 10 years from 2006-16. He was named the 2014-15 Under Armour Athletics Director of the Year in NCAA I-AAA by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics.
A native of Niagara Falls, NY, Cegles also worked in senior athletic department management roles at Rutgers (1981-86), Arizona State (1986-2002) and Temple (2003-06).
"I am elated that Vic Cegles has made the decision to join the UConn family," said Director of Athletics David Benedict. "Vic has a diverse background and will bring a vast amount of leadership experience in collegiate athletics, including running his own successful athletic department, in addition to serving over 21 years at Power Five institutions. While Vic's focus will be on the external areas of the department, he will be a key member of my leadership team and will be counted on to make many of the day-to-day decisions.
"Vic brings with him ties to the Northeast, over 30 years of college athletics experience and a reputation for developing student-athletes and coaches alike. He believes in the mission of higher education and may be one of the most competitive individuals I know."
"The University of Connecticut is nationally recognized for academic achievement and athletic success," said Cegles. "I look forward to working with their outstanding coaches, staff and student-athletes. I am most appreciative of the opportunity to assist David in managing their aspirations as they pursue national and conference championships and life-changing opportunities."
Cegles placed strong emphasis on resource acquisition at Long Beach State -- targeting the annual fund, capital improvements, scholarship endowments, ticket sales and corporate sponsorships. He established the Beach Athletic Club in 2006, which focused on centralizing and enhancing the annual fund.
Cegles and his team participated in the university's first ever capital campaign and raised over $25 million for athletics that supported locker room renovations, stadium scoreboards, videoboards, branding displays, a baseball hitting and training facility and scholarship enhancement.
Long Beach teams captured 36 Big West championships, made 70 NCAA postseason appearances under his leadership and have won the conference "Commissioner's Cup" six-consecutive years.
Cegles was a Senior Associate Athletics Director at Arizona State from 1986-2002 directing media relations, marketing/promotions, television/radio, sport properties and athletics development while administrating baseball, men's and women's golf and the women's gymnastics program.
A 1970 graduate of Bucknell University with a degree in business administration, he was a co-captain of both the basketball and baseball teams.
A former coach, Cegles served as a basketball assistant at Carnegie Mellon University (1980-81) and as an assistant basketball and baseball coach at West Virginia Wesleyan (1973-76) and Indiana University of Pennsylvania (1972-83).
He holds a master's degree in counseling and student personnel services from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
Cegles and his wife Bonnie have two sons: Vic, a former baseball standout at Rutgers, is the Director of External Relations for Athletics at Albany; and Casey, a former wide receiver at Towson University, is the Deputy Athletic Director at Kent State.
