PHILADELPHIA - The UConn women's track and field team wrapped up its final weekend of competition before the conference championship with a split-squad showing at the 122nd annual Penn Relays on April 28-30 and the Brown Invitational on May 1.
After opening the weekend strong at the first two days of the Penn Relays (Days 1-2 recap is available by CLICKING HERE), the Huskies wrapped up the three-day event in front of 44,469 fans at historic Franklin Field in Philadelphia.
At Brown, the Huskies collected four of the top six spots, including the top-three, in the 800m run, paced by a gold-medal 2:09.27 performance from Laura Williamson. Lisa Zimmer (2:09.72), Maggie Christe (2:12.11) and Lauren Scahill (2:16.86) rounded out the top-six.
Freshman Hannah Fleming delivered a career-best 5:14.92 second finish in the mile, taking seventh overall, while fellow rookie Yejide Adegoke grabbed a pair of top-15 finishes in the 100m dash (12.88) and 200m dash (26.52).
Senior Toni Ann-Moore took fourth in the 110m hurdles (14.77), while Gabriella Attanasio (3.50m) and Laurel Bailey (3.35m) finished 1-2 in the pole vault, checking in just ahead of teammate Nicole Kelly (3.35), who took fourth.
Odrine Belot won the triple jump with a 12.69m leap and also paced the team in the long jump with a mark of 5.65m. In the triple jump, Melodee Riley (12.22m) and Christine Donat (11.14m) took second and third, respectively.
Senior Kelly Myers shined in the shot put final, collecting a bronze medal with a toss of 13.63m, while Megan Chapman (47.78m) and Samantha Mazur (41.75m) placed second and fourth, respectively, in the discus. Kelli Thomas rounded out field action with a third-place 50.49m throw in the hammer.
"We had a successful meet at Brown University," said Husky head coach J.J. Clark. "Despite poor conditions, we were able to produce several personal-bests and strong conference marks, setting us up well for the conference meet."
The Huskies will have a week off before gearing up for the 2016 outdoor American Athletic Conference championships, scheduled for May 12-15 in Orlando, Fla. Check back with uconnhuskies.com for a complete championship preview.
