May 12, 2015 CLEVELAND - University of Connecticut Director of Athletics Warde Manuel was named a winner of the Under Armour AD of the Year Award on Tuesday by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of America (NACDA).
Manuel will be honored with the award on June 17 at NACDA's 50th Annual Convention at the World Center Marriott Resort in Orlando, Fla.
Manuel became UConn's Director of Athletics in March of 2012 and the Huskies have won six NCAA national championships under his watch -- the most ever by Husky squads in a three-year period.
"I am very thankful for this honor from NACDA and accept it on behalf of all the student-athletes, coaches and staff at UConn," said Manuel. "Their hard work and dedication to our school make this a very special place and allows all of us to be successful academically, athletically and in the community."
Manuel led the completion of the $40 million fundraising effort for the construction of the Werth Family UConn Basketball Champions Center, which opened in the fall of 2014 and provides the Husky men's and women's program with a training, practice and academic services home. The facility is the first privately-funded building on the UConn campus and is named for Peter and Pamela Werth, who donated a total of $7 million to the building.
Manuel also helped to secure an $8 million gift, the largest in UConn athletic history, from former Husky men's soccer student-athlete Tony Rizza for the building of a new state-of-the-art soccer stadium on campus.
During the 2013-14 academic year, UConn won national championships in men's basketball, women's basketball and field hockey.
The Huskies also won NCAA title in women's basketball in 2013 and '15 and field hockey in '14.
In addition, the UConn men's and women's soccer and baseball teams have all made NCAA appearances during his time here while individuals from men's and women's track, women's cross country and men's and women's swimming and diving have competed in NCAAs as individuals.
Manuel directed UConn's acceptance into membership of Hockey East, the nation's premier men's ice hockey conference, as the Huskies began play in the league in 2014-15.
The UConn Division of Athletics once again had an outstanding rate performance in the NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) in 2014 as all three national championship teams posted a perfect 1000 single-year score while field hockey also had a perfect 1000 four-year score. A total of 14 UConn teams posted perfect single-year scores of 1000 and five had multi-year scores of 1000.
The men's basketball team has had APR scores of 978, 947 and 1000 in the past three years as Manuel has helped develop a comprehensive academic plan for all UConn programs.
Manuel is a 1990 graduate of Michigan and was the Director of Athletics at the University at Buffalo for six years before coming to UConn.
He was a letterwinner in both football and track and field for the Wolverines.
Manuel is one of four Director of Athletics that are being honored from the Football Bowl Subdivision along with Mitch Barnhart of Kentucky, Chris Del Conte of TCU and Ian McCaw of Baylor.
