Nov. 13, 2014 STAMFORD, Conn. - The Fairfield County Sports Hall of Fame has announced that its UConn Wing will be named for David L. Mazza, who founded and oversaw the sports programs at UConn's Stamford campus. Mazza, a Stamford native and high school history teacher in the Stamford school system for 35 years, passed away in January 2014 at the age of 71.
Mazza, who started the sports programs in 1966-67, will be recognized Thursday (tonight) with a ceremony to unveil a plaque that will be permanently displayed at the Hall of Fame's home at UConn's Stamford Campus. A reception and program will also feature the induction of the three newest UConn Wing Hall of Famers -- Craig Austrie, Bruno Giordano and Rick Robustelli. All three honorees are also Stamford natives like Mazza. The UConn Wing was started in 2007 and will have recognized 27 former athletes and coaches following this year's induction.
Under Mazza's guidance, the Stamford campus had teams in baseball, basketball, tennis and golf for nearly 30 years before they were halted in the late 90's. It also had a women's softball team for several years.
The event is a fundraiser for the Stamford Campus Director's Fund for student scholarships and the Fairfield County Sports Commission, which oversees the Hall of Fame. For more information or to purchase tickets contact Tom Chiappetta at 203-984-4806 or via email at tomchip21@aol.com.
