MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - In the 184^th installment of a rivalry dating back to 1896, the University of Connecticut baseball team was shutout by New England neighbor Rhode Island, 2-0, at the Cougar Invitational, hosted by the College of Charleston at Patriots Point on Sunday afternoon. The loss, their second of the weekend, dropped the Huskies to 2-4, while the Rams lifted their record to 4-2.

Sophomore lefty Anthony Marzi (Berlin, Conn.) held URI hitless through the first 6.2 innings, despite giving up the first run of the game in the fifth inning.

Sophomore first baseman Pat Quinn reached on a hit by pitch and later came around to score from second, with two outs, on a error by UConn senior third baseman Tim Martin (Stratford, Conn.).

Marzi's day ended after giving up back-to-back two-out singles in the seventh. He took his first loss of the season and totaled three strikeouts and three walks before being pulled for senior RHP David Fischer (Scotia, N.Y.). Fischer went the rest of the way, allowing one run on one hit and striking out two. Both Rhode Island runs were unearned.

Senior LHP Anthony Pisani improved to 2-0 in a six-inning, three-hit effort, while striking out five and walking three. Junior righty Mike Bradstreet came on and pitched a one-two-three ninth to record his second save of the season.

The Huskies outhit the Rams 6-3 for the game, with six different players getting into the act for UConn. Junior second baseman LJ Mazzilli (Greenwich, Conn.) successfully reached base with a single in the fourth to improve his hitting streak to six games.

Connecticut is on the road again next weekend in Starkville, Miss. for a pair of games against Mississippi State and Lipscomb.

The Huskies will play host to the Rams later this season when the two teams meet at Dodd Stadium in Norwich, Conn. on May 15.
