Softball Drops Pair To USF

UConn softball dropped two games today in Tampa, Fla. against BIG EAST rival USF. The Huskies fell in game one, 9-2, and in game two, 2-1. UConn dropped to 17-22 overall and 5-7 in BIG EAST action. USF improved to 31-16 overall and 11-1 in BIG EAST games.
Connecticut tallied both runs in game one with solo home runs from junior Amy Vaughan and sophomore Brittany Duclos. UConn generated only four hits on the day. Along with the back-to-back solo shots in the fifth inning, sophomore Marissa Guches finished the day 2-for-3.
UConn had all three pitchers appear in game one with sophomore Kiki Saveriano taking the loss. She pitched 4.1 innings and allowed eight runs. Saveriano was only charged with three earned runs as the Huskies committed three errors in the field.
Game two saw Saveriano pitched a complete game, allowing two runs on seven hits.
USF took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
The Huskies evened the score in the top of the fourth inning with an RBI sac fly from Guches. Connecticut loaded the bases with one out before Guches drove home freshman catcher Andrea Huelsenbeck. Freshman Audrey Grinnell struck out to end the inning.
The Bulls scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth.
For the day, Guches finished 3-for-5 to lead Connecticut.
The two teams will finish the season series on Saturday in Tampa beginning at Noon.
