Six Huskies Victorious At Hurricane And Brown Invites

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - The University of Connecticut men's track and field team split their time today, as they competed at the Hurricane Alumni Invitational and the Brown Collegiate Invitational. The Huskies were led by Justin Blades, Mike Rutt, Scott Johnson, Aaron King, Mike Alleman and Cody Unger as they all placed first in their respective events.
UConn's best event at the Hurricane Alumni Invite was the 800m run, with five Huskies placing in the top-10, including Rutt who won the race with a time of 1:50.34. Dan Holst finished right behind him as he crossed the line in 1:50.45, while Tim Bennatan was fourth (1:51.29), Johnson was ninth (1:55.51) and Joe Clark was 10th (1:56.05).
Johnson followed up his ninth place showing in the 800m run with a victory in the 1,500m run, as he won the event with a time of 3:52.79. Chris Whyte was the final Husky to place in the top-10 in track events, as he finished seventh in the 400m hurdles with a time of 54.57.
UConn's best field events during the Hurricane Alumni Invite were the shot put and discus, as three Huskies placed in the top-five in both. Alleman won the shot put with a throw of 17.37, while King won the discus with a distance of 41.97. Eric Masington placed second in the shot put (15.16m) while Jesse Chapman finished fourth (13.51m). Chapman also placed third in the discus with a distance of 40.05 and Joshua Faboyede placed fifth with a final mark of 38.61.
King posted his second victory of the day in the long jump, as he posted a jump of 7.05m. Unger, who recorded UConn's final victory of the day, won the javelin with a throw of 71.23m. Noel James cleared 2.11m in the high jump to place second, while Faboyede had a mark of 59.59m in the hammer throw to also place second.
Blades' victory came at the Brown Invite, as he won the pole vault with a clearance of 4.45m. Three other Huskies recorded top-five finishes at the Brown Invite, including Lucas Clyne who placed second in the 800m run with a time of 1:53.50. Justin Siekierski and Dylan Dombrowski each finished fifth, Siekierski in the discus (45.25m) and Dombrowski in the javelin (56.93m).
Also competing at the Brown Invite for UConn were Matt Granata (6th, 400m run-50.66), Brandon Fowler (6th, 400m hurdles-57.22) and Tyrone Faverey (12th, 200m dash-23.86).
The Huskies return to action next weekend as they travel to Albany, N.Y. to face Albany in a dual meet.
