Softball Splits With Mercer

The UConn softball team continued their extended road trip with two games at Mercer in Macon, Ga. UConn split lost game one, 4-0, before taking game two, 4-3. Senior Julianne Towers blasted her fourth home run of the season on the day.
UConn was on the wrong end of a complete game shutout in game one. Mercer senior pitcher Kari Chambers struck out 12 Huskies while allowing just three hits.
Game two saw UConn sophomore Kiki Saveriano a pair of Mercer pitchers to earn the victory. Saveriano struck out 11 while allowing just one earned run.
The UConn offense benefited from the long ball in game two as both Towers and sophomore Marissa Guches hit home runs on the day.
Junior Amy DeLuca drove in the game's opening run with an RBI single in the first plating Towers. Guches had a solo shot in the second before DeLuca recorded her second RBI single of the day in the third.
Towers hit her solo shot in the fifth to give UConn a 4-2 advantage. Mercer added a run in the bottom of the fifth and the bottom of the seventh before Saveriano struck out the last batter of the game.
UConn now stands at 5-5 on the season and will face Auburn tomorrow in Auburn, Ala. at 2:00 p.m.
