Huskies Overcome Deficit to Win 9-3 at SDSU

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - A six-run, five-hit eighth inning along with 17 hits on the night lifted the No. 22 UConn baseball team over San Diego State 9-3 on Saturday night at Tony Gwynn Stadium in San Diego, Calif.
Tonight's game marked the Huskies' first of their seven-game road trip in California as UConn came out with the victory behind junior Nick Ahmed's fourth multiple-hit game this season.
Ahmed finished the night 4-for-5 with three runs scored, one RBI and his first home run of the year, while classmate George Springer had a solid outing with two hits and three RBI in the non-conference battle.
UConn took the first-ever meeting with San Diego State (2-8) as the Huskies improve to 3-4 on the year. UConn is now 2-1 against Mountain West Conference opponents in program history.
With the score tied at three heading into the eighth inning, the UConn bats heated up as the Huskies knocked in six runs on five hits. The first run of the frame came on a fielding error but was followed by hits and RBIs from senior Mike Nemeth, Springer and sophomore LJ Mazzilli.
Doug Elliot scored the go-ahead run on an Aztec error before Ahmed walked with one out to load the bases. Nemeth followed with a single to right field to score John Andreoli from third before Springer hit his first triple of the year to clear the bases and extend UConn's lead to five. Springer later scored on Mazzilli's single down the left field line.
SDSU took an early 3-0 lead in the third inning but UConn answered back tying the game with one run in each of the fourth, fifth and seventh innings. In the seventh, Ahmed homered to tie the ballgame at three. It was his seventh home run of his career.
UConn's Dave Fischer earned the win, his first of the year and second of his career, as the junior came into the game in the seventh and closed out the contest for the Huskies. He went three innings, allowing no runs and one hit, while striking out three. Senior Elliot Glynn made the start for UConn in tonight's contest as he went six innings, giving up three runs, none of which were earned, and three hits. The Long Beach, Calif. native struck out five in the ballgame and walked four.
San Diego State's Philip Walby (0-1) took the loss as he was the third player to pitch for the Aztecs, who finished the night throwing six hurlers. Walby threw one inning, allowing four runs and two hits. Aztec starter, Corey Black gave up two runs and nine hits in 4.1 innings.
UConn's Nemeth added a 4-for-5 effort along with two RBI. Mazzilli tallied one hit and two RBI on the night as well.¬
The Huskies return to action on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. (EST) against No. 14 California.
