STORRS, Conn. - UConn junior Garrett Bartus (St. Charles, Ill.) has been named Atlantic Hockey Association Goaltender of the Week, as announced today by the AHA's league office. Bartus led UConn to a 5-0 victory at Army in the AHA opener on Friday night with 47 saves.
Bartus has been one of the nation's most worked players the past few seasons and had his hard work rewarded with the first shutout of his career Friday night. Bartus stopped 47 shots and currently ranks third in the NCAA with 125 stops after three games. The Huskies own a 1-1-1 record.
Bartus has faced over 130 shots this season after setting a UConn record with 1,085 saves last season. Bartus' 1,085 saves ranked tied for second in the entire country last year. Presented with the team's Most Valuable Player Award last season, as voted by his teammates, Bartus currently ranks fifth in the nation with a .954 save percentage.
UConn defeated Army, 5-0, on Friday night behind Bartus' 47 saves and two goals from sophomore Cole Schneider. Sophomore Brant Harris netted the game-winning goal early in the second period.
Connecticut will continue a five-game road trip to start the season with a pair of games against teams from the Hockey East Association. The Huskies will play at UMass Lowell on Tuesday at Conway Arena in Nashua, N.H. beginning at 7 p.m. UConn will then play at No. 13 Merrimack on Saturday night in North Andover, Mass. That game also begins at 7 p.m.
