STORRS, Conn. - UConn baseball players George Springer and Matt Barnes concluded the 2010 summer competing with the USA Collegiate National Team last week as USA lost to Cuba in the gold medal game of the V FISU World University Baseball Championship inside Meiji Jingu Stadium.
During tournament play, Barnes was one of four players honored at the WUBC as he had the lowest individual ERA of the tournament with a 0.00 ERA. He finished the summer with a 3-0 record in four appearances and three starts and held an ERA of 1.42. In 19 innings of work, Barnes allowed eight hits, three earned runs and five walks, while striking out 26 batters, which was second-best on the team.
Springer led Team USA with seven doubles, 34 total bases and 18 RBI. He finished the summer batting .292 in 18 games, while adding 21 hits, 12 runs and two home runs. His grand slam against Japan earlier in the month lifted USA to a 4-2 win to advance to the gold medal game.
Both Huskies return to campus for the fall semester, which begins on August 30 in Storrs.
