STORRS, Conn. - On an overcast Saturday, the University of Connecticut softball team fell twice at the hands of Louisville, 5-0 in game one and 10-1 in six innings in game two.
Jess Arremony led the Huskies on the day with a 2-for-4 effort, singling twice and scoring the Huskies lone run on the day.
The Huskies drop to 21-29 on the season and 7-14 in the BIG EAST while Louisville improves to 36-16 on the year and 15-6 in conference play.
In game one, Louisville threatened first in the top of the fourth when they loaded the bases with one out. Saveriano buckled down and got Jordan Trimble to pop out via the infield fly and Katelyn Mann to ground out to the third baseman as the Huskies ended the inning unscathed.
In the fifth inning, however, two Cardinal runners got the free pass advancing to first on a walk. With two outs on the board, Chelsea Bemis launched a three-run shot to dead center in the sixth to give Louisville the first lead of the game. They added to their lead in the sixth inning as Alicja Wolny cranked a roundtripper to right field. A bases loaded walk later in the inning, got Kristin Austin across the plate and put Louisville up 5-0.
In the top of the seventh, the Cardinals threatened again as they loaded the bases with no outs, but the Huskies clawed their way out escaping with out a run coming across the plate thanks to some heads up plays. A 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh ended the game as UConn walked away with a 5-0 loss.
Saveriano finished pitching 5.1 innings, allowing six hits and five runs while striking out three, including two in the second inning. Ali Adelman came in for her 22nd relief appearance pitching 1.2 innings, allowing two hits and no runs.
With the outfielders in, a check swing triple by Austin knocked in two runners for the Cardinals in the top of the second inning in game two. A shot through the left side by Vanessa James brought home Austin for the 3-0 lead after one and a half innings.
The defensive play of the doubleheader came in the top of the third inning. After laying out and making the diving stab at a ball up the middle, Julianne Towers fired the ball to first base to beat out the runner for the first out of the inning.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Huskies got on board for the first time on the day. Jess Arremony (Griswold, Conn.) started things off beating a single out to shortstop. She moved all the way to third when Kim Silva (Cheshire, Conn.) knocked a double to deep centerfield that went over the Louisville centerfielder's head and came across to score on a suicide squeeze bunt by Jen Ward (Waterford, Conn.) as the Huskies cut into Louisville's lead exiting the inning down by just two.
Louisville added to their lead in the fourth as Bemis got her second homerun on the day when she lined a three-run shot down the leftfield line to give the Cardinals a 6-1 lead. Another three run blast by Colby Wherry in the sixth inning gave Louisville the decisive 9-1 lead. A laser shot up the middle by Trimble brought home Wolny to give the Cardinals the 10-1 lead and the run rule victory.
The Huskies will finish out their regular season on Sunday, May 9 in a single game against Louisville that will begin at Noon. UConn will honor its four seniors in a ceremony prior to the start of the game.
