Huskies Drop Senior Day Matinee 7-3 To Louisville

STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut softball team dropped their final game of the regular season Sunday to Louisville on Senior Day. Amy Vaughan (Somerset, Mass.) was stellar on the day both in the field and at the plate going 2-for-3 with two RBIs launching a two-run shot to deep rightfield.
The Huskies finish their regular season with a 21-30 record and 7-15 in BIG EAST play while Louisville ends their regular season with a 37-16 record and improve to 17-6 in conference play.
Tricia Sullivan (New Bedford, Mass.) got the start on senior day and finished the game pitching five innings, allowing six hits and two earned runs while striking out four. Kiki Saveriano (Lexington, Mass.) came into the game in relief of Sullivan and pitched the final two innings allowing two runs and striking out two, both looking.
Louisville jumped out to an early lead scoring three runs in the first, the first two runs to come across were unearned after a couple of errors. The Cardinals added to their lead in the second inning as Chelsea Bemis knocked out a sacrifice fly to deep centerfield scoring Kristin Austin for the fourth run of the day. Melissa Roth, after doubling earlier in the inning would come across on a passed ball to give the Cardinals a five run lead after two.
The Huskies finally got on the board in the fourth inning when Vaughan launched a two-run blast that cleared the right field wall to bring the Cardinals' lead to just three.
Louisville added another run to their total in the sixth inning on a single to centerfield by Alicja Wolny. One pitch later, Wolny attempted to steal second base and a hard throw by Vaughan, who moved from right field to behind the plate at the beginning of the inning, nailed the runner at second and ended the inning.
A deep shot to left by Vanessa James added another run to the Louisville total in the seventh inning as Katelyn Mann came around from first to score.
UConn got one back in the final half inning of play as a shot right down the leftfield line by Brittany Duclos (Mystic, Conn.) nailed third base and allowed Kathleen Brenneman (Cheshire, Conn.) to come across the plate for UConn's third run of the day.
