SYRACUSE, N.Y. - After a seventh inning scare, the University of Connecticut softball team held on to earn a 3-2 game one victory over Syracuse on Saturday. The Huskies dropped their second game of the day 9-6 as Syracuse's Hallie Gibbs was 2-for-2 on the day with both of her hits leaving the park.
The Huskies record improves to 19-23 on the season and 5-8 in BIG EAST play while Syracuse's record changes to 24-20 on the year and 8-7 in the BIG EAST.
Kiki Saveriano (Lexington, Mass) earned the game one victory improving to 11-10 on the season. She let up five hits and two earned runs while striking out 10 Syracuse batters on the day. Tricia Sullivan (New Bedford, Mass.) had the loss in game two pitching three innings and allowing six earned runs on six hits while also striking out four.
The Huskies got on the board first in game one in the top of the third. After reaching base on a fielder's choice, Julianne Towers (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) came around to score as Amy DeLuca (Bordentown, N.J.) ripped a single up the middle.
In the fourth, Connecticut added a couple more important runs to their total as Marissa Guches (Sammamish, Wash.) blasted her sixth roundtripper of the season. Guches' home run would ultimately be the game winning hit.
Syracuse got on the board in the top of the seventh on a two-run home run by Veronica Grant. The Huskies ended the Orange threat when Saveriano struck out her tenth batter on the day, to end the game.
In game two, Syracuse got on top first putting a couple of runs on the board in the opening inning. The Huskies cut the lead in half in the second as Guches crossed the plate for the second time on the day. After walking, the designated player moved up to second on a passed ball, to third on a single to right field by Kim Silva (Cheshire, Conn.) and crossed the plate on a wild pitch. UConn tagged another one on in the top of the third as DeLuca blasted a solo shot to tie the game up at two.
The Orange opened things up in the bottom half of the third, putting three more runs on the board. They added another three in the fourth inning to really open up the lead.
The Huskies added two in the fifth as Guches blasted her second homerun of the day and another two in the sixth on a sacrifice fly to center by Justyne Roy (North Dighton, Mass.) and a single up the middle by Amy Vaughan (Somerset, Mass.) to score Towers and Brittany Duclos (Mystic, Conn.) respectively.
That was all the Huskies could manage as Syracuse tacked another one on in the bottom of the sixth to solidify the victory.
The Huskies will be back in action tomorrow, Sunday, April 25 in their final game of the weekend against the Orange of Syracuse with a Noon start.
