STORRS, Conn. - A 3-for-4, five RBI effort by St. John's Kacee Cox was the determining factor in the Red Storm's 5-2 victory over the University of Connecticut softball team Friday. The Huskies were led by a 2-for-3 effort by Amy Vaughan (Somerset, Mass.), the lone Husky to record multiple hits in the loss.
Connecticut drops to 10-17 on the season and 1-3 in BIG EAST play in the loss while St. John's improves to 12-15 on the year and earns their first BIG EAST victory of the season.
The Red Storm wasted no time getting on the board in top of the first inning against Huskies starter Kiki Saveriano (Lexington, Mass.). After reaching via a hit by pitch, Amber Curry came around to score on a scorching single by St. John's leading hitter Cox. Julianne Towers (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) made a nice defensive effort turning a double play to end the threat in the top of the first with just the one run allowed.
In the bottom of the second, Vaughn jumpstarted the Huskies offense with a single to right off pitcher Linzee Sumrall. Marissa Guches (Sammamish, Wash.) followed with a four pitch walk and both she and pinch runner Kathleen Brenneman (Cheshire, Conn.) moved up a base on an illegal pitch by Sumrall.
Brenneman got the Huskies on the board scoring on a suicide squeeze by Amanda Martin (Rowley, Mass.) while Towers brought around Guches with a two out single up the middle. After two innings of play the Huskies held a 2-1 advantage over the Red Storm.
The Huskies would relinquish the lead in the top half of the third inning. After a single by Amber Curry, Cox ripped a one out, two-run homerun over the left field fence that gave the Red Storm a one run lead. Connecticut catcher Martin picked off base runner Kristi Cady to keep the damage at a minimum as the Red Storm ended the inning with a 3-2 lead.
The Huskies threatened in the bottom of the sixth inning. Arremony started things off with a walk moving over to second on a sacrifice bunt by Martin. Pinch hitter Jessica McDermott (Clarksburg, N.J.) also reached first via the base on balls and the Huskies had two on board with just one run out. A snow cone grab in centerfield snared a would-be hit away from Towers as the Huskies exited the inning still down a run.
In the top of the seventh, the Red Storm added to their lead. With the bases loaded, Cox lined a single up the middle that scored two as St. John's extended their lead to three runs with just a half inning to play.
Saveriano finished the day pitching all seven innings, allowing five earned runs and striking out six.
The Huskies finish out their season series with St. John's Saturday, April 3 with a doubleheader that will begin at Noon.
