STORRS, Conn. - A two-out RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning by Amy DeLuca (Bordentown, N.J.) was the deciding factor in the University of Connecticut softball team's 6-3 victory over St. John's on Saturday. The single broke a 3-3 tie between the two teams as the Huskies went on to add two more to the board and walk away with the win.
Kiki Saveriano (Lexington, Mass.) earned her seventh victory of the season pitching all seven innings for the Huskies, allowing just two earned runs and striking out eight.
UConn improves to 11-18 on the year and 2-4 in BIG EAST play while St. John's drops to 13-16 in 2010 and loses their first BIG EAST game of the year dropping to 2-1.
The Husky bats picked up right were they left off in the second game of the double header against St. John's on Saturday. Doubles by Julianne Towers (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) and DeLuca gave Connecticut an early 1-0 lead. Connecticut was able to tack on two more runs thanks in part to an RBI single from Amy Vaughan (Somerset, Mass.) and after one inning of play the Huskies held a 3-0 advantage.
Saveriano found herself in trouble in the third inning. After an error and a walk Saveriano gave up a game tying three run blast to St. John's best hitter Kacee Cox. Saveriano was able to retire the next two hitters and the score was notched at three a piece.
The Huskies got Amanda Martin (Rowley, Mass.) and Towers on board in the bottom of the fourth inning via the base on balls. With two outs on the board, DeLuca ripped an RBI single up the middle to break the tie and give the Huskies a one run advantage.
UConn added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth. Jennifer Ward (Waterford, Conn.) ripped a leadoff single up the middle and was brought home just one batter later as Towers launched a shot to left field to extend the Husky lead to three, where it remained.
The Huskies return to action on Tuesday, April 6 when they head out to Smithfield, R.I. where they will take on Bryant in a 4 p.m. game.
