DELAND, Fla. - Behind a 2-for-3 effort by Julianne Towers (Goodlettsville, Tenn.), the University of Connecticut softball team took game one of the Stetson University tournament from Bethune-Cookman 5-4, Saturday.
The Huskies six runs came via two three-run innings in which Towers scored twice, driving in another Husky run.
With the victory, the Huskies improve to 3-9 on the year while B-CU drops to 11-14 on the season.
The Huskies started things off in the bottom of the third inning when Jen Ward (Waterford, Conn.) got on base via the hit-by-pitch, stealing second base and advancing to third after a single to right field by Towers. One batter later, Brittany Duclos (Mystic, Conn.) drove in Ward after an error by the Wildcat's second baseman Cesley Tafoya.
On a fielder's choice for Amy DeLuca (Bordentown, N.J.), Towers moved up to third and DeLuca advanced to second in the next at bat via a stolen base. Towers tallied a run after yet another error by the Wildcats' infield as DeLuca moved up to third on the muffed throw. Shortstop Jessica Arremony (Griswold, Conn.) drove in the third Husky run of the inning on a ground out to shortstop to give the Huskies an early 3-0 rule.
The Wildcats got two on the board in the top of the next inning after an RBI double to left center and a wild pitch, taking a 4-3 lead in the top of the fifth inning on a two-run homer by the centerfielder Ashton Hinds.
But the Huskies would not back down adding another three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Marissa Guches (Sammamish, Wash.) started things off with a single down the leftfield line and was replaced on the basepath by Kim Silva (Cheshire, Conn.). Silva advanced to second via a sacrifice bunt, the 10th of the season for the Huskies. She moved over to third on a groundout to the pitcher by Ward and crossed the plate one batter later as Towers knocked in her lone RBI of the night on a single up the middle. Towers nabbed second and after a single to left field by Duclos, Towers reached home to give the Huskies the lead once again. An RBI single by DeLuca one batter later gave the Huskies the two-run cushion heading into the final inning of play.
In the top of the seventh, the Huskies surrendered one run, but Ali Adelman (San Diego, Calif.) came in relief getting the two outs that she needed to close out the game and earn her first career save.
Tricia Sullivan (New Bedford, Mass.) earned her first victory of the season and 39th career win after 6.1 innings pitched and four strikeouts against 28 batters faced.
The Huskies return to action later Saturday when they will take on the host team of Stetson University in a 6:30 meeting.
