DELAND, Fla. - With a 5-3 victory over Yale and a 4-3 win over Stetson, the University of Connecticut softball team finished their time in Florida with a 4-0 weekend at the Stetson Invitational.
A four-run first inning in game one against the Bulldogs propelled the Huskies to their first victory of the day. Justyne Roy (North Dighton, Mass.) proved to be the hero in game two, driving in the game winning run in the fifth inning and ending the game with a diving stab on a line drive down the right field line that took away what would have been a walk-off single by the Hatters.
The Huskies finish their time in Florida with a 6-9 record after their 4-0 weekend in DeLand, Fla. Yale drops to 0-3 on the year while Stetson falls to 13-11 after losing two to the Huskies over the course of the weekend.
In game one, UConn got out to a four-run lead in the bottom of the first inning started off by Julianne Towers (Goodlettsville, Tenn.). Towers began the game with a single through the left side moving up to second after Brittany Duclos (Mystic, Conn.) also singled through the left side.
Towers crossed the plate just two batters later after back-to-back walks for Amy DeLuca (Bordentown, N.J.) and Marissa Guches (Sammamish, Wash.). A wild pitch in the next at bat got Duclos across the plate and a sacrifice fly by Roy to left field brought home DeLuca. Jessica Arremony (Griswold, Conn.) brought home the eventual game winning run with a single to centerfield as the Huskies scored their fourth run of the inning.
The Huskies tacked on an insurance run in the fourth inning but easily took the game with a 5-3 score.
Game two came just minutes after the Huskies finished up their first victory. The Huskies used a strong first inning to propel themselves through the rest of the game once again, this time scoring three runs in the first. Again, the Huskies were led off by Towers who began things with a double to centerfield. She moved over to third as Duclos got on and advanced to second after a throwing error by the Stetson pitcher.
DeLuca brought home Towers on a single to second base advanced to second on the throw to the plate and to third on the error where Duclos also came across the plate bringing the lead to 2-0. A Guches out one batter later allowed DeLuca to come home for the 3-0 lead at the end of the first.
The Huskies tacked on another run to the total in the fifth inning and again it was Towers crossing the plate. The junior started things off with a walk, moving to second on a ground out by Duclos and to third as DeLuca grounded out to the pitcher. Roy drove home Towers for the gamewinner.
The Hatters got a couple of runs across in the sixth, putting another run on the board in the seventh before Roy ended things with her heroic efforts nabbing the line drive to seal the 4-0 weekend.
The Huskies return to action in their first game in the Northeast when they head to Quinnipiac on Wednesday, March 17 at 3:30 p.m.
