Storrs, Conn. - Art Quimby, the leading rebounder in the history of the University of Connecticut Basketball program, passed away Monday, December 6 at the age of 77.
The family will accept visitors Sunday Dec. 12 from Noon to 1:00 p.m. at Potter Funeral Home in Willimantic, with a funeral service to follow at 1:00 p.m.
"Growing up in Braintree, Massachusetts, I was able to get WTIC and listen to the incredible rebounding totals that Art was able to put up," said UConn head coach Jim Calhoun. "They are numbers that are inconceivable today and still make him among the best rebounders in the history of the college game. I was fortunate to get to know Art Quimby in my time here at Connecticut and not only was he a great player, but he was an even better person and ambassador for the state of Connecticut and Connecticut Basketball."
Born July 1, 1933, Mr. Quimby played for the Huskies from 1951-1955 and was a member of four varsity teams that were 80-19 overall with an NCAA bid in 1954 and first-ever NIT bid in 1955. He led NCAA in rebound avg. in 1954 (22.6/game) and ranked No. 2 in nation in rebound avg. in 1955 (24.4/game). He still holds NCAA all-time record for rebound average by a senior (24.4/game in 1955) and ranks No. 3 (24.4/game in 1955) all-time in NCAA single-season rebound avg and tied for No. 4 all-time nationally in career rebound avg. (21.5 in 80 games=1,716 rebounds)
He is No. 1 at UConn in career rebounds (1,716) and career rebound average (21.5). He totaled more points (1,398) and rebounds (1,716) than any player in UConn history and was a Three-time All-Yankee Conference (53, 54, 55) and Two-time All-New England (54, 55) selection. He was named to UConn Basketball All-Century Team in 2001 and to the UConn Huskies of Honor in 2007. After his playing career at UConn, he was selected in 1955 NBA Draft by the Rochester Royals.
