STORRS, Conn. - University of Connecticut baseball head coach Jim Penders has announced that senior Elliot Glynn and junior Nick Ahmed will serve as UConn's captains for the 2011 season as voted on by the entire team.
Glynn, who served as one of captains in 2010, has earned the role for a second straight year. In three seasons with the Huskies, Glynn has posted an overall record of 13-10 in 38 appearances. In 203 career innings thrown, he has struck out 130 opponents. Last season, he was 7-3 in 15 trips to the mound, while he struck out 46 and allowed 29 earned runs.
"Elliot has proven to be one of our best competitors on the field over the past three years and he did a good job with his captaincy last year," said Penders. "His veteran guile and confidence will be leaned upon as he grows even more into a leadership role as a senior."
Ahmed enters his junior season in 2011 after batting .300 with 80 hits, 43 RBI and 57 runs scored in 2010. As the Huskies' starting shortstop, he has played an invaluable role for the ballclub the past two seasons, starting in 111 of his 114 games played as a Husky. In his two-year career at UConn, Ahmed has recorded 91 runs scored, 135 hits, 63 RBI and 45 stolen bases in 56 attempts.
"Since his first days with us as a freshman, Nick has distinguished himself with his attitude, concentration, and effort on the field and off," said Penders. "His edge and consistency will provide excellent touchstones for our team on the climb to reach our goals in 2011."
"We are fortunate that Nick and Elliot will have a lot of assistance from large and strong senior and junior classes in holding themselves and each other accountable as we strive to get better every day."
UConn will begin its season at the BIG EAST/Big Ten Baseball Challenge in Florida beginning on February 18.
